Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) William Hobert (Wild Bill) Eversole, D-970, a member of Chapter XXXIII, Special Forces Association served in the U.S.Army and the Vietnam War.

Bill joined the Army in 1958 before finishing high school but became a highly trained and skilled infantryman. He served in several conventional and non-airborne units before joining the 10th SFG (A) at Bad Tolz in 1963, where he completed his Special Forces qualification training. He later served in the 1st, 5th (two tours in RVN) and 6th SFG (A). His last SF assignment was back to the 10th.

As a senior NCO, Bill was reassigned out of Special Forces to be the First Sergeant of a non-airborne (straight-leg) transportation company in Germany where, remarkably, he achieved great success as a unit leader. Returning to CONUS, Bill was assigned to the 187th Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). There he achieved great personal and professional success, first as a rifle company First Sergeant and, later, as a Battalion Command Sergeant Major. In 1981, he retired from the army with 23 years’ service. Bill is pictured in the group photo; top far right and standing when he was awarded the Purple Heart. David Edwards whose picture appears last and is the owner of Anything-American Custom Military Shadow Boxes shared this story with Comes A Soldier’s Whisper tribute page. David has collected countless stories of his Veteran customers for whom he has made military shadow boxes to house their military medals and says that he is often asked to do research on their Veteran family members who rarely talk about their wartime experiences.
