This photo was taken with my 101st Airborne father holding the bronze plaque gifted to him and many others in gratitude by the Belgian people after The Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.
The plaques were artfully crafted from melting down spent artillery shells. This amazing plaque hung on our dining room wall my entire growing up in a house that was also filled with history books by our Mother.
Dad rarely spoke of his war experience until this interview by the Daily Commercial Newspaper in 1997, only two years before his passing. For those who knew Dad, they can tell by the look on his face in this photo, the sadness of recalling those never forgotten wartime experiences. I remember him once saying, “I saw a soldier vaporize into thin air”.
Comes A Soldier’s Whisper, remembering our history and soldiers one day at a time…
