“He that outlives this day and comes home safe will stand a tip-toe this day is named.”
~Shakespeare

They were the first Allied force to land on Omaha Beach in the greatest seaborne invasion ever launched.

Lt. John Hemcher’s clear blue eyes clouded over as he explained why he had not talked about the war, or shared his memories for a long time, as he explained, “I just left too many good friends over there, too many, They were the heroes, you know.” After surviving D-Day, their tanks began their journey toward Berlin and the snows of winter. Hemcher said casualties were great and the cold was bitter with no way to get warm. He noticed 3 trucks going by with what looked from the back like cords of firewood. Hemcher raced to stop the driver and ask for wood. “Help yourself,” the driver said, but as he go to the bed of the truck, Hemcher saw that what he thought were sticks of wood were the frozen legs of stacked corpses. “It was horrible,” he said.

We are very grateful to John Hemcher’s nephew, George H. Hemcher, for sharing these family photos. Please share your family photos of those who served, so we may feature and honor them on Comes A Soldier’s Whisper, where we are all connected.

God Bless all who serve and keep us safe.
