DON’T KILL ANYONE ELSE WHILE DOING THE JOB

I was with the USN March 1961 to March 1983, E6-AO1 and was deployed VA-152 Det ZULU Bien Hoa AB RVN 1964, VA-125/VA-145/VA-165/CV-34/CV-43/CV-61, and a Navy Recruiter in North Hollywood, California.

I recall one event while at Bien Hoa AB, RVN (1964), with the USAF 34th Tactical Group. They received their first A-1E Skyraiders in-country (12). We had 18 A-1H/J models. The day they arrived, my CO got a call from the USAF stating that they needed “a little help” dearming the incoming A/C. So myself (AO3), Chuck “Beetle” Bailey (AO3), and 2 other AO strikers (E-3) were sent down to the USAF flight line to help out. It turned into an OJT session on “how not to lose your fingers, don’t kill anyone else while doing the job”.

When we walked into their shop, I said “what can we do for you”, their E-9 said “Are you people all they sent?”. I said “how many do you need, you only have 12 A/C, and why didn’t you call us and have them dearmed in the arming area instead of bringing them to the flight line armed?” That seemed to be the wrong answer, so I tactfully suggested we go out and get it done…. After we were done, we got a lukewarm thanks from their MSGT. On the way out I heard some under breath wise-ass comments from a couple of their NCO’s saying that the Navy was a bunch of wannabees. I turned to them saying, “That’s funny as I’m a qualified Master QC Inspector for the weapons systems, can build the ordnance, maintain/repair ALL the weapons systems, load the A/C, perform black box repair/installation, change out an engine, replace a MLG strut, patch bullet holes/battle damage, help mark targets from an L-19, perform small arms maintenance, have an A/C taxi license, chase the ladies, walk-talk-chew gum at the same time, etc From where I stand, it takes about 6-10 USAF specialties to do my job. That’s pretty good for a wannabee. PS – My crew can do most of those jobs also. Have a good day!!!!”

Upon retirement I was a contracted as a Non-Degreed Engineer on shipboard weapons system design, Sr Eng Tech for Development and management of complex A/C carrier overhauls, logistic management of surplus nuclear submarine repair parts/materiel. I was Owner/Operator of Sunset Fishing Resort, in Clearlake, CA from 1998 to 2002.
