DON’T TREAD ON ME

My name is Ralph Marshall, and I am a Vietnam Veteran.

It was 1967, when I was a high school senior. I kept seeing things on TV about the war, and thought that I should help out. I had no idea what war was like at the time, until I was involved in it. Military life was great at first. I didn’t mind the DI’s yelling, as I was used to it because of my military family background.

My dad was in Pearl Harbor, when it was attached by the Japanese! My two brothers were also in the Navy, but they were serving while I was still quite young. My dad didn’t share anything about the war with me. I was in the Army from 67-70 and served in Vietnam from 68, 69 and 70, driving convoys and flying as a door gunner!

I destroyed most of my pictures and other stuff, as I was attacked at the bus depot when I was coming home. I got rid of my uniform and all of my military stuff except for my dog tags and a couple of pictures, that I didn’t see. I then snuck out of the bus depot and walked home, only to be yelled at by my folks!

I don’t have anymore pictures, that I can find of me from service. My wife told me that I destroyed some paperwork in the garage during a fit of rage one day… As far as the actual war goes, I have memories that haunt me and would rather let them be. I find myself staying away from people, as I cant deal with them. I have managed to scare away 5 wives and working on my sixth right now. This one knows about my PTSD and is dealing with it and my 80% disability.

We have been married now for 21 years.
