My brother and cousin served in Vietnam.
They were spat on in the airport for their homecoming. My brother, Eddie Sikes went to Belleville High School in Michigan and served in combat as a Marine for one year in 1967 in DaNang, Vietnam. I have no photographs of him from service. He got jungle rot on his feet and contacted Agent Orange.
When Eddie got home, approximately 4 years later, he and his wife were divorcing. Eddie was a mess as you can imagine. Mom and my sister, Sharon was in the garden gathering up vegetables. They had been talking. All of a sudden Eddie cried out, “If there is a God and why can’t I erase Vietnam from my memory, why is my wife leaving me?” Such heartfelt anguish. The sky was clear and blue. All of a sudden it started raining only on Eddie. A circle of rain about 4 feet in parameter was around him. Sharon fell to her knees. Eddie fell to the ground crying. No one could talk except look up. I am sitting here very tearful as I write this. I have not thought about this in years. We families try to forget too…
My cousin Jack Molnar, served with the U.S. Army in 1965, and went to Viet Nam 1966 to 67 as Spec 4, truck driver. He was in Quinon,Pliek,Sigon and Cambodia. Also, our childhood friend, Eddie Bies went to Vietnam 1967 – 1969. He never came home.
His name is on a memorial stone with others in Belleville, Michigan.
