My name is Dale Jordan. I am a Vietnam Veteran.
My father and grandfather were both in the U.S. Navy. dad served in World War II and was a fireman on the Old Saratoga in the Pacific; he twice conducted A-bomb nuclear test dummies at the Bikini Atoll in 1946 and 1947. His war stories had an impact on my young life. It was my reason for enlisting, although Dad was initially upset at my joining the Army instead of the Navy…
I was in Korea in 1968. In 1969, I was a SP/4 for 25 months with 2nd/506th/101st Airborne in Vietnam. We were in that unholy A Shau Valley, Ap Bia Mountains, as it is known to the locals.
Many civilians non-veterans probably think that we glorify war, no on the contrary, we hate it. We just can’t shake it and the horror that we relive every day. The song “Sky Pilots” by the Animals (circa 1969) is about the chaplains who blessed our aircraft.
SKY PILOT
He smiles at the young soldiers and tells them it’s all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there’ll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
~ Eric Burdon & The Animals
We at Comes A Soldiers Whisper offer our salute and gratitude to Dale Jordan for his service to our country. May we never forget…
The above is an excerpt from Dale’s story which can be read in its entirety in the book, VIETNAM AND BEYOND.
