My name is Bruce Taneski, “SKI” to my friends.

My Brother John, Uncles John and Anthony were drafted and served in the U.S. Army. Uncle John served during WWII. Uncle Anthony and my brother served during peace time.

I served with the U.S.Army, Echo Co. Recon 4/12 199th Light Inf Brigade Jan 1970 to Sept 1970 Echo Co. Recon 1/11 5th Inf Division October 1970 to November 1970 Vietnam. I was with 11 Bravo Infantry and Long Range Recon Patrol.

The worst part of my wartime experience was the killing of my Recon Team Leader on November 8, 1970. My personal greatest fear was being captured. We were working n the backyard of the NVA with 4 or 5 other members of my team. We always talked about not getting captured and reminded one another to save one grenade for yourself just in case.

No one exposed to combat survives. Whomever we were destined to become was changed by the combat experience with a new person evolving in the process. In my memoir, “I CAME HOME, BUT IT WASN’T ME,” I explain how and why I was not the same young man coming home… For more information about my service, you may visit http://army.togetherweserved.com/bio/SP4BruceTaneski

As far as readjusting upon returning home, I found it difficult to relate. In Seattle, WA, the hippies called me horrible names. But once I arrived on my street in Philadelphia, the neighbors had flags out all along the street.

I am currently retired and writing a new novel about shell Shock and battle fatigue in WWI & WWII.
