Today we honor Stephen Kovacs 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions
“My Grandpa Steve always told me that he was a Screaming Eagle. He survived the war but after colon surgery, he had a heart attack and passed away in 1999. It seems like only yesterday that he was taken, but I know that he is here in spirit. He told me stories about him being in the war becoming separated as the last one out of plane as a paratrooper. Some of his friends in the plane did not make it.
He was with the army infantry and his buddies were with tanks. He told how they heard about a camp with men, women and children. When they arrived there and started handing out food, one little guy that he could never forget, was so scrawny, he gave hime a candy bar. He gulped it all of a sudden, but a medic told them to stop, and that they were going to make it worse. They had to stop offering them food, as they hadn’t eaten in so long, the food could make things worse.
I remember watching the series Band of Brothers, and I thought about the same thing and looked at my hubby and said, “omg, that is my Grampa Steve right there doing the same thing he did, him and his troops, and it gave me chills. Grandpa says he went in a tank to Germany too and then started to choke up. I only saw him cry once, when his mom was in the hospital. He didn’t cry in front of me, as he thought it was a sign of weakness. He wanted us to be strong. So he stood tall and got himself together and said never cry and to keep your head up be strong.
He lost a son in the Korea war, his only child. I called him Grandpa because he adopted my mother and raised me as his granddaughter. He loved my children and called them his great grandkids he had a great relationship with my special needs daughter, and his wife had close relationship with my other daughter taking them on weekends and spending time with them. His wife passed away in 2010. They gave up their lives to raise us, and that is why I called them Grampa and Grama. They will both always be missed.
I’m proud of you Grandpapa, you served your country well.”
