Dad is featured here holding the small bronze medallion crafted by the people of Bastogne in gratitude for the Americans and Allies who fought for their freedom. This plaque was made from melted down bronze artillery shells and depicted the German officer demanding surrender with the Americans responding with “NUTS.” The plaque hung on our dining room wall for as long as I can remember. Speaking of dining, Dad would always say, “eat your dinner, people are starving in Europe,” as he took a slice of bread and wiped his plate clean…
