My name is Neil Hansen, and I am a Vietnam Veteran.
I served with the United States Navy from 1970 to 1976 on the ship, USS OKLAHOMA CITY CLG-5, the sister ship USS LITTLE ROCK CLG-4 in the military park in Buffalo. Most of my memories are being on the gun line and giving much needed support to the men on land. It felt good being able to do that.
My original position on the ship was working in the missile house (TALOS), but during gun fire support missions, my assignment was as a gun captain in the 6″ turret! My military life wasn’t as great as those that fought in-country. I always felt and knew they deserved the credit for that conflict!
I had four of my brothers all serve in the US Army. Three of them served in the 50’s and early 60’s, and the other served in the late 60’s to early 70’s. But none of them were Vietnam Vets. While in service, most of my communications were through letters. I never had a problem with the reception after coming home.
Most people just looked at me and kept going!

“This old marine says naval gunfire is the most unique sounding artillery ever fired! You should have been inland and heard it! I guess it was from being fired off the flat ocean! Beautiful! Nice to meet someone who actually created that sound!”
~ Randy Herrington, Vietnam Veteran, USMC
“Neil your job was pretty important if you ask this V.M. Vet”
~Roger Herrington, Vietnam Veteran
