“No American will think it wrong of me if I proclaim that to have the United States at our side was to me the greatest joy. I could not fortell the course of events. I do not pretend to have measured accurately the martial might of Japan, but now at this very moment I knew the United States was in the war, up to the neck and in to the death. So we had won after all! … Hitler’s fate was sealed. Mussolini’s fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder.”
~ Winston Churchill
The United States declared war on December 8th 1941. We were drawn into World War II when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in the early morning of December 7th 1941. The US entered World War II for a number of reasons. The fate of the world ended up being in the balance based on this decision. One can only imagine the life and death decisions made by Churchill in his office with that cigar and drink in hand…
Today, I would like to share one of Dad’s letters written as a 101st Airborne paratrooper, 502nd PIR after his jump into Normandy and surviving the battle of Carentan later known as “Purple Heart Lane.” In just 2 weeks, his group would make another jump into Holland…

My Darling,
No letter today. I wonder how many people say that in a day. Many no doubt.
I received five hometown papers today, not bad. I still like to read them though. I also received a box of Martha Washington candy from a friend back home. Yum, yum.
Darling, where this poem came from, I don’t know. But I liked it so well, and it has such a meaning that I thought I would send it to you.
Forever yours,
David
You are lonely there without me
As I am lonely for you here
I long to be back with folks
And the sweetheart I hold so dear
So my dear one you must have courage
And help to get this great battle won
So then I can come back to you
And then our hearts will beat as one
So I’ll be waiting for you Darling
Waiting when the war is won
Then we will live our lives together
And we will never part, no never more
