I started the journey of trying to uncover my Grandpa’s experience during WWII.
Walter Neton, my Grandpa, was with the 101st Airborne, 506th PIR Division from 1942 to 1947 and served in the European Theatre.
He started writing letters home to his parents who were of Polish descent and knew how to speak the language. He later liberated one of the concentration camps, which is where he met my Grandma. They were married July 17, 1945 in zell am see Austria.
Robert Sink became my uncle’s godfather after the war. I met one person who knew my Grandpa and his name was Mr. George Bar. He was the captain of the service company and he walked my grandma down the aisle because her parents were lost in a camp outside Europe.
After two years of writing a message on a WWII message board, I listed five names that were mentioned in the newspaper article about their wedding. I was able to confirm four out of the five passed away and Mr. Barton was nowhere to be found. All of a sudden I got an email that this man who read my message knew of Mr. Barton and he was in Virginia. At 92 years of age the man who walked my Grandma down the aisle and was the best man in the wedding was sitting in front of me and my mom.
This is Mr. Barton with me 65 years later…
