We had the pleasure of meeting Nancy Van Apeldoorn, Founder and Coordinator of the LAP ROBES FOR VETERANS at the Honor Flight return of 45 veterans from visiting the memorials in Washington DC on Sunday, May 18th.

On a cold, windy, rainy November day in Washington, DC, a veteran sat shivering in his wheelchair as he attended the celebration of Marine corps 232nd Birthday at the Iwo Jima Memorial on November 10, 2007. Nancy saw the need to find a blanket for this veteran and upon her return home to Rochester, New York, she set a goal to make a Lap Robe for every veteran in need. She creates blankets with emblems from every branch of service. Shown in the photo is the beautiful throw with a soft and warm flannel backing.

Please show your support by visiting and “liking” her Facebook page @ www.facebook.com/LapRobesForVeterans where she provides beautiful military lap robes for veterans in nursing homes as well as Gold Star Mothers. Due to supply and demand for our veterans, the lap robes are not for sale. Donations for this moving and worthy cause can be made to:

The Rochester Chapter is approximately 300 members strong that welcomes all sewers of all skill levels and from many different walks of life. They have 10 Neighborhood groups that meet monthly to learn and share new sewing skills and participate in community service sewing projects. Each lap robe requires about $35.00 of material. The Lap Robes For Veterans project will continue as long as there are those who can volunteer time and/or funds. There were 400 Lap Robes donated in 2012, 700 in 2013 and a growing demand in 2014.

This year Nancy was proud to be able to provide lap robes to the WWII Honor Flight men and women coming back to Rochester from their trip to the memorials in Washington, D.C. She hopes to continue to reach as many veterans as possible with your support.

Comes A Soldier’s Whisper remembering our history, veterans and the wonderful people and organizations who make a difference!
