My Great, Great Grandfather James Tharp also served as a soldier in the cavalry.
His grave is amongst the many Tharp family members in Petersburg, Indiana. As I strolled through the cemetery, I couldn’t help but feel the strong pull and connection to my family members that I never met. My Grandpa Ibren Tharp passed away in 1943. My father was only 18 turning 19 later that year. If I had any doubts about who I am and where I came from, that visit was a beautiful reminder, very peaceful and grounding too. I’ve come to realize that staying connected to my past makes me happy and propels me to a brighter and better future…
“What you need to know about the past is that no matter what has happened, it has all worked together to bring you to this very moment. And this is the moment you can choose to make everything new.”

I’m sure that Grandpa Ibren is very proud of his son, David, my father, a 101st Airborne paratrooper who passed away in January 1999. His wartime letters are chronicled in the book, Comes A Soldier’s Whisper, a final resting place for his thoughts and dreams for the future.
COMES A Soldier’s Whisper remembering all soldiers of all wars.
