The Battle Does Not End When The Troops Come Home

My father, David Clinton Tharp was a 101st Airborne paratrooper with the Five-O-Deuce.

Although he miraculously survived the battles of Normandy, Carentan, Holland and the Battle of the Bulge during WWII, he returned with the invisible and scars of war, post traumatic stress syndrome. Very little was known back then about this silent weapon that accompanies our soldier’s return home. War changes a soldier. It changes his family too.

Dad used to reflect with great sadness regarding all of the men returning from war as “changed” from who they once were-some missing sight, hearing, and more often than not, limbs. But those changes cannot take away from who these men were and continue to be.

My father’s wartime letters in COMES A SOLDIER’S WHISPER give a compelling assessment of WWII from a soldier’s viewpoint. His writing gives voice and recognition to the wartime thoughts and feelings of that era and interestingly enough echo similar sentiments of soldiers today some 70 years later…

The following quote by Staff Sgt. Ty M. Carter is beautifully and eloquently stated:

“Please take the time to learn about the invisible wounded. Know that a soldier or a veteran suffering from Post-traumatic stress is one of the most passionate and dedicated men or women you’ll ever meet. Know that they are not damaged, they are simply burdened with living with what others do not. They are resilient and will emerge stronger over time.”

~ Staff Sgt. Ty M. Carter, Medal of Honor Recipient 8/28/2013

May we as a country be the strength behind our military soldier’s armor and provide the support upon their return to civilian life.
