My name is Jimmie G. Robison, and I am a WWII Veteran.
I was born in Vilonia, AR and am the youngest of seventeen children. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, I enlisted in Little Rock, AR at the age of 21.
My oldest brother served in WWI and my brother just older than me also served in WW II in the infantry. When I left for war in “42” my Dad said he was pleased to have had 3 sons serve our country. He said it made him feel his life had been worth something.
I served from February 10, 1942 to March 19, 1948 as a Staff Sergeant and assigned to the 357th fighter group, 364th fighter squadron at LIESTON, England. I was a crew chief on P51s.
I served mostly at Leiston and at the end of the war my outfit was transferred to Neubeiberg, Germany as part of the occupation forces. The worst part of the conflict for me was the time I spent at Leiston with the V-2 rockets coming over at night and exploding near us and having our planes come back to crash land on or near our airfield, killing and maiming many. But I’d rather not talk about it, losing my life and losing my good buddy’s.
My family welcomed me home of course. The national celebration was over before I got home since I was in Germany until 1948.
I found readjustment to civilian life difficult. I didn’t feel like I fit in any more. Even today I have nightmares every night. I’m 94 years old now and have had three happy marriages (lost two wives to Alzheimer’s). I have one son and some wonderful grand and great grandchildren. I lead an active life of retirement, traveling with my present wife and playing a fair game of golf.
