Staff Sergeant Leon Oppis flew in 35 bomber missions as a turret gunner during WWII.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Major Jimmie Stewart and rarely spoke of his wartime experiences. All of Leon’s brothers served and one was a POW. They miraculously survived to be reunited with their families.
The first pictures shows:
Top left is Leon Oppis
Bottom left, Ben Oppis
Bottom right, Fred Oppis (POW)
Top right, Morris Oppis
In the other picture their mother, Lena is in the top center and their sister Tessie is bottom center. Tessie also wanted to serve but her parents wouldn’t let her.
We welcome you to share your family photos of those who served both past and present, so we may feature and honor them on our COMES A Soldier’s Whisper Veteran tribute page www.facebook.com/ComesASoldiersWhisper/
