COMES A Soldier’s Whisper is proud to share Phyllis’ story:
“I vividly recall when my brother and his classmates were loaded onto a bus from school to go and see if they were fit to be drafted for the Vietnam War.
These were seniors and I prayed all day that my brother wouldn’t have to go. I turned out that his knees kept him from going. But 10 more boys were found to be fit for enlistment.
They all served and all came home. They were changed and not at all the same happy go lucky boys they were before, but fearful and so hurt. While I greatly admire all of our veterans, the Vietnam Vets are very special to me, as it was the one war that I actually knew boys who fought in it. It was on the news in our household everyday. All Vietnam Vets have my heart.
Thank you all for what you did!”
~ Phyllis Harris
I can also relate to the sentiments expressed by Phyllis. I graduated from Portage High School in Indiana during 1969, while my young classmates were being drafted all around me. I am sorry to say in retrospect, that I did not fully understand the impact of what was going on at the time. We now see how the residue of war changes those who survived the physical war but have the eternal and daunting task of managing the emotional wounds as well …
