The following is one of my 101st Airborne father’s wartime letters from the book, Comes A Soldier’s Whisper with sentiments that resonate today. Wishing you all a beautiful and peaceful Easter!
England Easter Sunday April 1944
My Dearest,
I hope this letter finds you well and happy on this beautiful Easter Sunday.
I hope and pray that on next Easter day, we should be together, my darling. It seems that last year has just flown by. I didn’t even realize that my little sister’s birthday had passed until I got a letter from home today. They’re all quite well, by the way. Betty got a new dress for her birthday. I’ll bet she’s really proud of it. She usually is of something like that.
I received a card and letter from you today and also a letter from your mother. We had Easter services this morning, darling, and I went. I wonder if you did. Our service was swell. I’ll tell you about it someday. It was very short. But I hardly think anyone regretted going. It was held on a hillside, and the grass is very green, and around the pulpit, there were brightly colored parachutes draped around. It looked really nice.
May we be together soon.
Yours forever, love and kisses,
David
