On this day in History 99 years ago, The United States joined it’s Allies Britain, France and Russia to fight in World War One.
My Father was one of them. Infantry, wounded twice, sent back to Virginia and discharged with a general discharge for “misrepresentation of age”. He had run away from home and lied about his age, he was 16.
I’m the little guy with the bow tie with my Father, brother and sister. Emmons Avenue, Sheepshead Bay. Circa 1955.He was Commander of The American Legion, Bill Brown Post.
I can remember him often saying “The Army will make a man out of you”. Another time on a very cold morning, I was maybe 16, trying desperately to get the heat on in the car before it had warmed up. He looked at me with a smirk on his face and said ” When I was your age, I had a rifle in my hands and a bayonet on my side and I wasn’t shittin in my pants either”.
We grew up living the American Dream.
Thanks for everything Pop.
