Many of my family members have served in the military since 1776 and most wars since. For the most part no one really talks about his or her service.
I enlisted July 1970. The Air Force was able to promise me a position in the police field. I was 18 and wanted something I was interested in. For the most part the first year was training or OJT with 3 weeks of combat training after. I was with the 377th Security Police Squadron in the Law Enforcement section. We worked police duties during the normal course and if we came under attack we became base defense.
Vietnam was a mix of police work and some combat activity. The worst period was from March 1972 to June 72. We had a couple guys killed and the Easter Tide Offensive began at that time. We received a rocket attack and expected more action as the NVA were moving in our direction.
I have to say that I don’t regret going or serving and really don’t feel anything negative toward anyone who protested.
It was their right.
