Today we honor Vietnam Veteran, David Vacca, a USMC who served in Da Nang, Vietnam.
We had the pleasure of meeting David at a recent event honoring Gold Star Mothers. The following is a poem that David shared with me as I was leaving to go home. He said, “Take this with you and read it, for it describes us Vietnam Vets.”
We were soldiers sent to a foreign land,
We followed the orders of those in command.
We were young boys full of life,
In a strange land of death and strife.
Soon each boy became a man,
Fighting the enemy hand to hand.
We were Heroes not at all –
Our Heroes are written on “The Wall.”
We were captured, killed and maimed,
As we fought this enemy under different names.
We did not turn tail and fell,
As we fought for “The land of the free.”
We came home with smiles on our faces,
Only to be looked upon with shame and disgrace.
We were called various name and spat upon,
This was our Welcome Home.
Because we were combat vets,
Our war at home was the worst yet,
We are proud of our service rendered –
Remember, it was Washington that surrendered.
Although the years have come and gone,
We still haven’t received our Welcome Home.
We served our country by doing our bet,
We will forever be Brothers and Vietnam Vets.
