STILL MISSING YOU DAD

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

My dad was a Vietnam veteran 68-69, 1st Air Cav. and the best soldier I ever knew. My father’s full name was Thomas Edison Armstrong. This is a picture of my father. He was in Vietnam at An Khe where he was with the 1st Air Cav as Battalion Reenlistment NCO. Dad held quite a few positions during his 21 years in the Army. His last MOS was an Army Recruiter. My father joined the Air Force in 1948, stationed…..

WITHOUT FEAR OF CONTRADICTION

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

“I finished “Never Forgotten” Wednesday. I laughed, I cried, I cursed and sometimes I just sat there and remembered. If you could walk me through that gamut of emotions, 46 years after DEROS (Date of Estimated Return from Overseas), then I can say, without fear of contradiction, that you have achieved a significant level of literary accomplishment.” ~ Bill Dennison, Vietnam Vet AMAZON: www.amazon.com/Jenny-La-Sala/e/B00NR36UYM/ref

IT HAD A VERY BIG IMPACT ON ME AS A KID

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

My grandpa was Charles Cole and he served in WW1. I believe he was with the 24th MI. Uncle Phil Oconnel served in the ETO in WWII and another uncle who served with the Sea Bee’s in the Pacific during WWII. His name was Douglas Cole. My cousin Randy Oconnel served in the Vietnam Era. I’m pretty proud of all of them as they told me their stories of the things they did and the things that they saw. It…..

HEARING WITHOUT LISTENING

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

I know that I for one was perhaps one of the many in 1966 “hearing without listening” to this very moving song performed by Simon and Garfunkel as a teenager during the Vietnam War. As a mature adult, I hear it with new meaning and a sadness, a very deep sadness thinking of all the little boys playing soldiers in their youth and finding out all too soon that war was nothing as they might have imagined it to be,…..

IT WAS LONELY WHEN I WAS BY MYSELF

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

I got drafted in 1966, one year out of high school. I was in Nam in 1966- 67 with the 11th Combat Aviation Battalion. I missed both holidays for those two years. It was lonely when I was by myself. I met a guy in basic training Jerry Lemons, from Illinois. We went through basic, at Fort Leonard Wood and at Ft. Polk Louisiana and Vietnam, and last 6 months at Ft. Ord in California. We were together the whole…..

USING YOUR WEAPON COULD BE ACCIDENTALLY DEADLY

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

During my college winter break, I enlisted in the Massachusetts Army National Guard January 1980 and earned my commission July of 1982. This is a picture of myself on the first deployment in Iraq at Camp Speicher serving as a Civil-Affairs Officer in 2004. I was a logistics officer [major] at a corps support group [colonel level in command with 3000 soldiers]. Due to a personnel change, I was assigned to cover the civil-affairs position within our unit. I am…..

On this day in History 99 years ago, The United States joined it’s Allies Britain, France and Russia to fight in World War One. My Father was one of them. Infantry, wounded twice, sent back to Virginia and discharged with a general discharge for “misrepresentation of age”. He had run away from home and lied about his age, he was 16. I’m the little guy with the bow tie with my Father, brother and sister. Emmons Avenue, Sheepshead Bay. Circa…..

HE WAS MY HERO AND BEST FRIEND

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

Here is my handsome daddy, Msgt Gunnery Sgt. Francis R. Lemerond. Dad told me a bit from his war experience. He was in a bunker and his friend that he met during boot camp was following my daddy’s voice as he was yelling and guiding his friend towards him. As he was headed towards my daddy they threw a grenade. The grenade landed on his buddy and blew up. My daddy buried his head and all of a sudden something…..

FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY

jennysala Uncategorized 0 0

I am not a veteran but I come from a family of veterans. I have always been very much aware of the many sacrifices our soldiers make on behalf of our freedoms. My grandfather is Belgian and was a small child when liberated during WWI before coming to the United States. My father served in the Korean War and my uncle was with the National Guard during the Vietnam War. While studying at NYU, I came across a homeless man…..
