Tomorrow we take flight to attend the Grand Opening and Exhibit by The Museum of Military History in Kissimmee, Florida, showcasing my father’s collection of letters in Comes A Soldier’s Whisper on Tuesday, April 8th @ 6pm. The museum has taken special pride in recording eleven of the original wartime letters in a Power Point presentation and display. Visitors will now be able to view the letters and “listen” to them as they are read aloud. Children will especially appreciate…..
DO YOU RECOGNIZE THE 101st Airborne SOLDIERS IN THIS PHOTO? A 101st Airborne, Five-O-Deuce Paratrooper’s WWII photo album surfaced in France & was purchased as memorabilia over the last few years. Russell Miller appears to have been the owner of the album with many personal photos of himself, family and fellow band of brothers, all from his unit, 502nd PIR. Most photos are not named making it difficult to contact them. Three photos of my father, David Tharp appear in…..
LOVE, HONOR, SACRIFICE and COUNTRY The song lyrics are from our COMES A SOLDIER’S WHISPER’s poem with singing and music rendition by Allen Harle, son of Robert Harle, a decorated 101st Airborne of the 502nd PIR, who knew and fought along side my father, David Tharp during WWII. Comes A Soldier’s Whisper did a special feature and story in honor of Robert Harle on March 31, 2014. Robert and his son, Allen are shown in the photo today. Allen’s son…..

Today we honor John Sherman, 101st Airborne, 327 Gliderman WWII. His mother and father, two oldest brothers and sister were born in Cornwall, England with one older, one younger brother and me born in Detroit, Michigan. John was the second youngest. His dad worked for the City of Detroit Street railways while John worked for Naval Ordinance, a plant in Warren, Michigan as a tool and die maker. All five boys served in the Army with the oldest in the…..
Like many Americans, as soon as Vincent J. Riccio heard about the attack on Pearl harbor, he wanted to enlist in the military. Vincent “Nick” (1921-2004) was inducted into the United States Army on August 15, 1942. He was discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant on November 5, 1945, exactly one year after the Ludwighafen mission. Vincent could have been a pilot – but took a voluntary wash when his brother was killed in the Pacific because cadets weren’t…..
It was through Mark Bando and his fabulous triggertimeforum.yuku.com/ website, that I was introduced to Mr. Robert Harle. Mark is the author of Breakout At Normandy and 101st Airborne: The Screaming Eagles At Normandy, just to name a few. Mark explained to me that since Mr. Harle was in the same 101st Airborne 502nd PIR, also with regimental headquarters as my father, that they must have known each other. I met Mr. Harle in June 2013 at a 101st Airborne…..
This is the pre & post WWII JUMP LOG For PFC Leopold J. Martin who served in the 101st Airborne (502nd PIR) during WWII and 82nd Airborne when he re-enlisted in 1949. Leo’s parachute school started at FT Benning GA in 1943 with more training at Camp MacKall NC. It’s fascinating that the parachute and plane type are also included. Note entry 7, the combat jump into Holland (Operation Market Garden) and the comment “Combat As Hell”. Bad grammar or…..

Jim Markson and I were married for 14 years. Neither one of us realized that he suffered from PTSD, nor did we understand that we, his family suffered as well. We divorced in 1987. PTSD and Secondary PTSD are prevalent in today’s society affecting our children of the future. You can take the soldier out of the war, but the war often remains inside the soldier. I am the daughter of a 101st Airborne paratrooper who although physically survived the…..
