My uncle was in WWII and the Korean War and probably a few more. He was resilient, they all were. Each war is different and fought in different ways. Yes, they were all resilient, the Vietnam Veterans. We should have been proud of all of them and as a Nation should have wept for those who didn’t return. I still weep for the young men who didn’t come home. My husband, Steve Clifton Wilder was in the Vietnam War with…..

It doesn’t change the past.” —Amy Grant, Christian singer- songwriter paying tribute to her father The book, COMES A SOLDIER’S WHISPER was published in loving memory and dedication to my father, David Clinton Tharp, who served in the 101st Airborne Division (the Screaming Eagles) during WWII, and to my brother, David L. Twenty years ago, I made 2 shadow boxes, one for my dad’s medals and one for my mom’s. Dad was in Europe and Mom, Isabel Sue Grosek was a nurse in the South Pacific during WWII. The last picture is of their anniversary 11 years before Dad got bone cancer. ~ Edward Grosek, Jr. God Bless all who serve and keep us safe. We are very thankful to Edward for sharing his parent’s story with Comes A Soldier’s Whisper veteran…..
My father, Edward A. Grosek, Sr. was born in 1919. He joined the service right out of Penn State with a degree in Engineering and became a Captain with “C” Battery 449th, AAA AW MBL. I wrote this poem back in 1999 for my Dad and Father-in-law Joe Grant who was a Supply Sargent. The shadow box with empty casings in the first picture and my father are from the 21 gun salute fired at the grave site for my…..
When people speak of the war, the first things that they think of are D-Day, storming the beaches at Normandy, war in the Pacific, or the Battle of the Bulge where my older brother Pat had been injured with a bullet in the neck. You never hear about Monte Cassino and the Italian Campaign. It’s as if it has been forgotten. The Italian campaign involved some of the hardest fighting in the war and cost the United States forces some…..
My name is Bill Snow (Benjamin William Snow) and I was stationed at Tuy Hoa AB from1968 to 1969. The sole picture of myself is on the beach in Tuy Hoa on the South China Sea. Prior to this photo, I wrote, “I Love You” in the sand and had a picture taken of that for my Mom, Dad and sisters. During that time I became really good friends with the Lee Van Nhac family. Mr. Nhac taught French at…..
My military service spanned from 1984 to 2006. In 2004, I worked in a Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad. The helicopter image shows the landing zone at our hospital. It was a very busy piece of real estate! The other picture shows a little kid that we took care of. He lost his eye when he picked up an unexploded bomblet from a cluster bomb. Cluster bombs are packed with dozens of smaller bomblets. The bomb dispenses them a little…..
Staff Sergeant Leon Oppis flew in 35 bomber missions as a turret gunner during WWII. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Major Jimmie Stewart and rarely spoke of his wartime experiences with his wife, Sheila pictured here. She proudly carries this picture of her beloved husband in her wallet. All of Leon’s four brothers also served and one was a POW. They miraculously survived to be reunited with their families. God Bless all who serve and keep us…..
Our Rock Group, Xanadu spent 7 months in Vietnam during the war. This picture is of me with a female bass player from the all-girl Korean group, ‘The Happy Dolls.’ This shot was taken in Chu-Lai, known as ‘Hell-on-Earth.’ I was an entertainer with USARV-MACV (United States Army Reserve Volunteers – Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. I spent 7 months ‘In Country’ touring all over the Republic as a Drummer with the Group, ‘Xanadu.’ In one picture, it shows us arriving…..
I would like to share with you how I came to write poems about the men in Easy Company of the 101st Airborne. When I was sixteen years old, I got into trouble for ‘fighting’ with another student. I was only defending myself but had to see the college counselor for ‘anger-management’. He and I clicked and we talked about many subjects and debated even more. He was Jewish and when he discovered I was interested in Jewish people and…..
